UCLA began as the Los Angeles State Normal School,
a teachers college that became the southern branch of the University
of California on May 23, 1919. In the fall of 1945, the College
of Engineering opened with an enrollment of 379 students. The
School now has seven academic departments and a total enrollment
of more than 4,000. The School is also home to five major externally
funded interdisciplinary research centers, as well as many other
multidisciplinary ventures.
For nearly 60 years, the UCLA Henry Samueli School
of Engineering and Applied Science has been redefining excellence
in education, research and community outreach. We are a place
where innovation is expected.
The School is well poised to address the challenges
of the coming century, boasting exceptional faculty and students,
groundbreaking research, and dynamic educational programs and
opportunities. Our work today will impact our everyday lives in
ways we cannot yet imagine.
Our students are among the best and brightest
in the nation, and bring fresh approaches and perspectives into
our classrooms and laboratories. We continue to admit extraordinary
students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels who are
eager to learn and contribute to engineering scholarship.
To better prepare our graduates for an increasingly
interconnected world, we have added a new three-course minor requirement
and are strengthening the curricula in all of our departments.
We are creating new opportunities for our students to conduct
hands-on research in their departments and in our interdisciplinary
research centers.
The School has recruited 21 exceptional new faculty
members in the last two years, academicians who are outstanding
researchers and inspirational educators. These scholars excel
not only in the discovery and development of new technologies
in traditional disciplines but also in emerging fields of study
and collaborative activities.
In just two years, the School has been awarded
five multimillion-dollar research centers, funded by distinguished
national and professional agencies. These centers will foster
exciting new discoveries in space exploration, wireless sensor
systems, nanomanufacturing and defense.
Our close ties to the community and industry ensure
that the impact of our work goes well beyond the research laboratory.
Outreach programs to Los Angeles area schools are generating interest
in engineering and science in middle and high school students,
and our research will help improve the quality of the lives we
lead.
