The UCLA Center for Excellence in Engineering and Diversity (CEED), established in 1983, operates within the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science. For more than 20 years, CEED has been committed to diversity in the engineering and hi-tech workforce, delivering programs that help educationally disadvantaged and underrepresented students achieve success in math, science and engineering. Through CEED, the UCLA School of Engineering supports a comprehensive K-20 approach to the development, recruitment, retention and graduation of engineering students who represent groups with low eligibility rates for the UC system.

The CEED mission

To increase diversity and excellence in the engineering workforce
and to provide academic enrichment that ensures equity
in the K-20 pathways that lead to the engineering degree.

CEED Facts

  • CEED supports over 200 engineering and computer science students.
  • CEED pre-college efforts support 26 middle and high schools, serving more than 1,100 students and 47 math and science teachers.
  • Since 1983, over 700 engineering and computer science students from CEED have graduated, many with honors.
  • In 2003, 57 CEED students graduated out of a total class of 613 engineering graduates. UCLA also honored eight of these students for academic excellence and community service.
  • In 2003, CEED was praised in Science magazine as a model program for ‘bridge programs to the next level.’
  • In August 2001, the National Science Foundation Corporate and Foundation Alliance (CFA) recognized CEED for its innovative partnerships in improving undergraduate engineering education.
