DEAN'S
LETTER
Our faculty are at the very core of the UCLA Henry Samueli School
of Engineering and Applied Science. For more than 60 years their
groundbreaking research has led to innovations that have changed
the world. At the same time, our faculty have trained future generations
of engineers and scientists, of which we are quite proud.
One major key in our three-fold mission of research,
teaching and service is to continue to recruit exceptional individuals
to our faculty. This year we have added seven accomplished and
talented men and women to our ranks. We are looking forward to
their work as they become an integral part of UCLA Engineering.
The newest members of our faculty are: Diana Huffaker,
Danijela Cabric, Chi On Chui, Puneet Gupta and Aydogan Ozcan from
Electrical Engineering; Christopher Lynch, Mechanical and Aerospace
Engineering and Suneel Kodambaka, Materials Science and Engineering.
In order to continue to advance the School, provide
our students the very best education, and address societal challenges
with cutting-edge research, it is essential that we continue to
attract and retain top-notch faculty members who will tackle these
important issues.
Just as critical to our School’s success
are senior faculty members who take on important leadership roles.
Richard D. Wesel, a professor of electrical engineering,
has been appointed as the Associate Dean of Academic and Student
Affairs. Harold Monbouquette has been appointed Chair of the Chemical
and Biomolecular Engineering Department. Jiun-Shyan (JS) Chen
has been appointed chair of the Civil and Environmental Engineering
Department.
Rick, Hal and JS are already proven leaders and
I am confident they will continue to make valuable contributions
in their new roles.
Sincerely,

Vijay K. Dhir
Dean

Sensor networks link students, researchers with real-world data
The Center for Embedded Networked Sensing (CENS), a UCLA-based
consortium of six schools, is testing and perfecting wireless
sensing technology to connect major chunks of the physical world
to the Internet — and the technology
also is being used to give students a glimpse of science in the
real world.

The Center for Embedded Network Sensing is mentioned in the article.
“At the Center for Embedded Networked Sensing at the University
of California, Los Angeles, researchers have connected a network
of wireless climate sensors and webcams in the James Reserve,
a wilderness area in California's San Jacinto Mountains, to a
public KML layer in Google Earth. Click on an icon in Google Earth
representing one of the reserve's nest boxes, and you get a readout
of the temperature and humidity inside the nest, as well as a
live webcam picture showing whether any birds are at home.”

Block
on Board
He's a scientist, a scholar, a car lover and a leader. Meet UCLA's
new chief executive up close and personal.
Gene David Block, UCLA's new chancellor, has always been fascinated
with how things work and making them work better. As a teenager
in tiny Monticello, N.Y., he helped his dad restore an MGA sports
car using rebuilt parts. He collected radios and was dazzled by
the switch from vacuum tubes to transistors.
As a Stanford undergraduate, he became fascinated with the study
of animal behavior and, as a graduate student at the University
of Oregon, discovered a lab focused on biological clocks. The
brain's electrical time-keeping system captivated the guy who
loved to tinker. So he embarked on a career in physiological psychology
that would eventually earn him international renown.
