DEAN'S LETTER

The UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science has the very highest standards for its faculty. We seek exceptional men and women who will continue traditions of excellence here at the school -- in leading research that will address great societal challenges, and who take great pride in transforming our bright and talented students into knowledgeable and skilled engineers.

One of these is Yu Huang, an assistant professor of materials science and engineering who last month received the PECASE award, the nation's highest honor for young engineers and scientists.

In this upcoming school year, three women and two men will join the school's faculty. The departments have led rigorous recruiting efforts to bring in these outstanding individuals, and I look forward to seeing their contributions to our three-fold mission of teaching, research and service. You can read more about them in the story below.

Sincerely,

Vijay K. Dhir
Dean

Yu Huang
, an assistant professor of materials science and engineering at the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science, has been named a recipient of the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE), the highest honor given by the United States government to young engineers and scientists at the outset of their professional careers.

NSF awards UCLA Engineering $10M to create customized computing technology

The UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science has been awarded a $10 million grant by the National Science Foundation's Expeditions in Computing program to develop high-performance, customizable computing that could revolutionize the way computers are used in health care and other important applications. Jason Cong, Chancellor's Professor of Computer Science is the director of the new UCLA Center for Domain-Specific Computing (CDSC).

UCLA Engineering adds new faculty
UCLA Engineering has added six new faculty in the upcoming school year. They are: Gerard C.L. Wong, bioengineering; Shaily Mahendra, civil and environmental engineering; Jennifer Wortman Vaughan, computer science; Suhas Diggavi, electrical engineering; Lara Dolecek, electrical engineering; and Tetsuya Iwasaki, mechanical and aerospace engineering.

OTHER NEWS
Electrical engineering professor Alan Willson will receive the 2010 IEEE Leon K. Kirchmayer Graduate Teaching Award for his "exemplary teaching and curriculum development and for inspirational guidance of PhD. student research in the area of circuits and systems." This is an IEEE-wide award and covers all fields of electrical engineering.

The Master of Science in Engineering Online Program has significantly expanded its course offerings, adding both aerospace engineering and systems engineering programs of study. For more information please attend one of the information sessions.

MEDIA WATCH: UCLA ENGINEERING IN THE NEWS
National Geographic online
Tracking Invasive Species by Phone (video)
New smart phone applications may enable the public to help scientists monitor invasive species and collect data in a fraction of the time it usually takes. The Center for Embedded Networked Sensing is featured.

New York Times
California's Glimmer of Hope: Nanotechnology
NanoH2O Inc., for instance, uses nano materials to improve the performance of reverse osmosis membranes in making dirty water clean or in desalination. Two years ago, the company licensed the membrane research of Eric Hoek, a professor of environmental engineering at U.C.L.A. Then it leased lab space in the NanoSystems Institute, which opened in 2007, because being at U.C.L.A. allowed the company to use expensive electron microscopes and other equipment.

UCLA Today
UC scientists warn state leaders of consequences of budget cuts
More than 300 leading UC scientists — including nearly three dozen from UCLA — sent a letter to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger warning him that proposed budget cuts to UC would impede scientific and technological progress, irreversibly damage the university and undermine prospects for California’s economic recovery. Copies of the July 6 letter, signed by faculty who are all members of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering or the Institute of Medicine, were also sent to members of the State Legislature and UC leadership.
