DEAN'S LETTER

As 2007 draws to an end, I would like to take this opportunity to highlight the important contributions by the School’s staff members. Their invaluable efforts ensure that we carry out our mission of education, research and service with great success.

There are more than 220 full-time staff members who perform a wide spectrum of essential functions for the School. Without their hard work and dedication, we would not enjoy the many accomplishments that we take such great pride in.

Staff members of the Office of Academic and Student Affairs help guide our students as they progress through their academic careers. Administrative support staff members work in departments, research centers, offices, and with faculty members by overseeing day-to-day functions and making sure that our long-term plans and programs stay on track. SEASnet staff keep our computer networks up and running.

Research engineers and laboratory technicians use their expertise to help our faculty members push the boundaries of technology innovation, while our R&D shops and nano-/micro-fabrication laboratories design and manufacture the devices and tools necessary for laboratory research and for teaching. Our building and equipment managers ensure that our facilities are safe and provide the appropriate spaces and tools needed for our all endeavors.

The Office of External Affairs helps build support for all the activities of the School, plans and manages many of our events, and publicizes our accomplishments to our alumni, friends, industry partners and the community.

The Center of Excellence in Engineering and Diversity plays a critical role in the School’s outreach efforts to help ensure future engineers hail from throughout the state’s diverse population.

And beyond their regular duties, many of our staff members volunteer their time for school events such as commencement, parents’ weekend, research forums, outreach programs and alumni gatherings.

I am very proud of that we have such dedicated and wonderful professionals who enrich the School. And I know that they too are proud to work for such a dynamic place.

On behalf of the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science, I wish all of you a happy holiday season and a healthy and prosperous new year.

Sincerely,

Vijay K. Dhir
Dean

FEATURE STORIES

UCLA Engineering Researchers Capture Optical Rogue Waves. Findings could help Resolve Mystery of Monster Ocean Waves
Researchers at the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science, have succeeded in creating and capturing rogue waves. In their experiments, they have discovered optical rogue waves — freak brief pulses of intense light analogous to the infamous oceanic monsters — propagating through optical fiber. The researchers, including electrical engineering professor Bahram Jalali and researcher Daniel Solli, reported their findings in the December 13 issue of the journal Nature. CAD Innovation from UCLA Engineering Researchers could save Billions of Dollars for the Semiconductor Industry
RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. (December 5, 2007) - Research at UCLA sponsored by Semiconductor Research Corporation (SRC), the world's leading university research consortium for semiconductors and related technologies, and the National Science Foundation (NSF) celebrated today CAD techniques that will facilitate advances for multiple technology generations. The resulting optimization methods can provide improvements equivalent to the investment of billions of dollars in fabrication equipment costs.

"This is a huge opportunity for the industry as optimal placement of circuits in the design process will deliver scaling of semiconductors that is independent of feature size, providing Moore's Law progress at less cost than other options," said Jason Cong, professor and chair of the UCLA Computer Sciences Department. "Closing such a large optimality gap will be equivalent to several technology generation advancements. In comparison, the introduction of copper interconnects was equivalent to a 30% interconnect length reduction, and so is each generation of device scaling, but each requires a multi-billion dollar investment."

OTHER NEWS
Four faculty of the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science have been elected as fellows of IEEE. The grade of fellow recognizes unusual distinction in the profession and is conferred by the IEEE board of directors upon a person with an extraordinary record of accomplishments in any of the IEEE fields of interest. Abeer Alwan, professor of electrical engineering was elected for "contributions to speech perception and production modeling and their applications.” Diana Huffaker, associate professor of electrical engineering, was elected for "development of optoelectronic materials and processing.” Jia-Ming Liu, professor of electrical engineering was elected for "contributions to the control and applications of nonlinear dynamics of lasers. Mani B. Srivastava, professor of electrical engineering, was elected for “contributions to energy-aware wireless communications and sensor networking.” The accomplishments that are honored shall have contributed importantly to the advancement or application of engineering, science and technology, bringing the realization of significant value to society.

Demetri Terzopoulos, Chancellor’s Professor of Computer Science at UCLA, was elected as a fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) for “contributions to computer graphics and vision.” The AMC fellows program celebrates the exceptional contributions of the leading members in the computing field. These individuals have helped to enlighten researchers, developers, practitioners and end-users of information technology throughout the world.

Kuo-Nan Liou, Distinguished Professor of Atmospheric Sciences and Founding Director of the Joint Institute for Regional Earth System Science and Engineering (JIFRESSE), was elected Vice Chair of the "Special Fields and Interdisciplinary Engineering" Section of the National Academy of Engineering. Liou holds a joint appointment in the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science in the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department. He will become Chair of this section on July 1, 2008.
