DEAN'S LETTER

I am very pleased to share with you that two faculty members of the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science - Deborah Estrin and John Kim -- have been elected to the National Academy of Engineering, among the highest professional honors that can be accorded to an engineer.

John and Deborah were each recognized for pioneering research that changed the landscape in their respective fields. John has made significant contributions to understanding the fundamentals of turbulence. Deborah has pioneered embedded sensing and directs a multi-university, multi-disciplinary center in that area. Recognition of their outstanding careers is a source of pride for all of us. Deborah is also the first female faculty member from UCLA Engineering to be elected. Since 2003, 11 UCLA Engineering faculty members have received this very distinguished honor, bringing the number of NAE members affiliated with UCLA to 24.

Throughout the school, our faculty are making great strides to address the challenges of the 21st Century. At the same time they are dedicated to the education of our outstanding students, to ensure they are well-prepared for successful careers. The awards that our faculty receive are a testament to their world-class caliber, and their strong commitment to our mission of research, education and service.

Sincerely,

Vijay K. Dhir
Dean

Two UCLA faculty members elected to National Academy of Engineering
Two faculty members from the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science have been elected to the National Academy of Engineering, one of the highest professional distinctions awarded to engineers. Deborah Estrin, a professor of computer science with a joint appointment in electrical engineering, and John Kim, a professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering, are among 65 members and nine foreign associates elected in 2009, the academy announced on February 6.

OTHER NEWS
Electrical engineering professor Abeer Alwan has been selected as Distinguished Lecturer by the International Speech Communication Association (ISCA) and will serve in 2009-10. ISCA is the largest speech science and engineering international society.

Mechanical and aerospace engineering professor Mohamed Abdou was elected a chairman to the US Council of Energy Research and Education Leaders (CEREL). CEREL consists of leaders of college and university-based energy centers and programs.

Computer science professor Jason Cong was selected as a fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). He was recognized for "contributions to electronic design automation."

Electrical engineering professor Chand Joshi has been selected to receive the 2009 Particle Accelerator Science and Technology Award from the IEEE Nuclear and Plasma Science Society. The award recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the development of particle accelerator science and technology.

Civil and environmental engineering professor Jiann-Wen Woody Ju was elected as a fellow of the American Concrete Institute. Fellows are recognized for outstanding contributions to the production or use of concrete materials, products, and structures in the areas of education, research, development, design, construction, or management. Ju also recently became an editorial board member of the Journal of Chongqing University (English Edition).

Dejan Markovic, assistant professor of electrical engineering has been selected to receive the 2009 NSF CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation. The awards program supports junior faculty who exemplify the role of teacher-scholars through outstanding research, excellent education and the integration of education and research within the context of the mission of their organizations. His award is for "Area-and-Power-Minimized Many-Channel Neural-Spike DSP."

Webb Marner, adjunct professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering, was recently appointed Secretary and Treasurer of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) by the Board of Governors of the Society.

Civil and environmental engineering professor John W. Wallace and 10 co-authors have been awarded the Best Paper award for Vol. 23 (2007) of Earthquake Spectra, which is the Professional Journal of the Earthquake Engineering Reserach Institute. The paper title is “Update to ASCE/SEI 41 Concrete Provisions."

Invention turns cell phone into mobile medical lab
Professor Aydogan Ozcan of UCLA has taken a typical Sony Ericsson phone, and by adding a few off-the-shelf parts that cost less than $50, he can get it to produce a remarkable image that shows the thousands of cells in a small fluid sample such as human blood.
Called LUCAS, the device could change the way doctors treat patients in rural areas.
Ozcan's work has also been profiled on CBS and the Science Channel. Visit his lab's news site for more links. And, an mp3 file of a recent BBC radio segment on LUCAS is located here.

Cheap High-Efficiency Solar Cells on the Horizon
UCLA researchers believe they have taken one step closer to creating high-efficiency solar cells using cheap plastic with a dash of silicon, it was reported Saturday. The research team (led by materials science and engineering professor Yang Yang) says it wants easy-to-use plastic solar energy cells to be sold at local hardware stores, and then hung like posters on the wall.

News and Views. Silicon photonics: Silicon's time lens
How can we capture ultrafast optical signals in real time? A time lens is one possibility — able to image the temporal profile of a short optical signal, analogous to a conventional lens. Such a device has now been created on a silicon chip. The article is by electrical engineering professor Bahram Jalali, post-doctoral research Daniel Solli, and graduate student Shalabh Gupta.
