Message from the Dean
Welcome to the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science. Today, you will find that we are better positioned than ever to address the grand challenges of the coming century. At UCLA Engineering, we are putting knowledge to practice with innovations in critical areas like green and renewable energy, the smart grid, health care, water desalination, wireless sensing and networking and cybersecurity, just to name a few. We are a place where innovation is expected and our work today will impact our future lives in ways we cannot yet imagine.
Many of the school’s discoveries over the years have led to modern day advancements. UCLA Engineering - the Birthplace of the Internet - is home to the first node of the Internet as well as the first reverse osmosis membrane. UCLA Engineering researchers were not only pioneers in air pollution research but also in the development of advanced artificial limbs.
The school champions research and education that is multi-disciplinary in nature. As one of the few universities across the country with a top ranked medical school on campus, we excel in biomedical and bioengineering research. With the opportunity to work with some of the country’s best physicians, our faculty are also helping to make a difference in the lives of their patients.
We encourage multidisciplinary collaborations among all our professional schools, other institutions, industry and government to ensure the school is well poised to succeed in our rapidly changing world.
Since its establishment in 1945, UCLA Engineering has been a leader in thought: our passion for knowledge has fueled the creation of eight nationally funded centers of excellence and research including our new $11.5 million energy frontier research center, the Center for Moleculary Engineered Energy Materials and $10 million Center for Domain-Specific Computing.
Our talented and diverse faculty are among the most-honored nationwide with memberships in the National Academy of Engineering, American Academy of Arts & Sciences, the National Academy of Sciences and who garner awards like the National Medal of Science, the Guggenheim Fellowship, and even the Nobel Prize.
We are a top-tier engineering school with achievements at every turn. Each year, we educate more than 5,000 students - an education that powers thousands of careers for decades. We have also educated generations of leaders, renowned for their entrepreneurship including Ronald D. Sugar, former Chairman and CEO of Northrop Grumman, Vinton G. Cerf, a Father of the Internet, Vice President and Chief Internet Evangelist of Google, Henry Samueli, Co-Founder of Broadcom, and the list goes on.
I hope you will take the time to explore and discover the school through our Web Site. We are delighted you are sharing this remarkable journey with us.
