Endowed Chairs Help Secure Faculty of
the Very Highest Caliber and Advance Knowledge for Generations
to Come
A privately funded endowment for teaching and
research excellence is one of the highest honors a university
can bestow on a member of its faculty. This is especially true
at UCLA, a public university, where significant private support
to recruit and retain distinguished faculty scholars is critical
in light of diminishing public resources.
Endowed chairs help the UCLA Henry Samueli School
of Engineering and Applied Science strengthen the overall quality
of the School’s teaching and research programs by attracting
diverse, gifted faculty who in turn attract the brightest and
most promising students.
In keeping with that mission, the School’s
goal is to establish 10 new endowed chairs for senior faculty.
These chairs provide powerful incentives to distinguished scholars
by ensuring a steady flow of resources to support their research.
In addition, the School plans to establish 20 five-year term chairs
to support the career development of promising younger faculty,
the academic leaders of tomorrow.
An endowed chair honors the donor as well as the
recipient, providing a unique opportunity to link the donor’s
name with scholarly achievement or to pay tribute to an individual
of the donor’s choosing. It can support the work of a scholar
with expertise in a traditional engineering field or in the increasingly
important realm of interdisciplinary study.
