Tomorrow’s Engineers Must Integrate New Approaches and Perspectives

At UCLA, a public university located in one of the most heterogeneous regions in the world, diversity is an indispensable element of academic excellence. The UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science’s commitment to a diverse faculty and student body requires strategies and programs that fully incorporate benefits in education, research, and outreach to the community. A population rich in diversity expands the range of knowledge, experiences, and viewpoints, leading to innovative new solutions to traditional problems.

Committed to increasing diversity in both student population and faculty, the School has launched an effort to increase the percentage of women students enrolled in engineering from 20 to 30 percent of the undergraduate student body, and the percentage of students from traditionally underrepresented groups from six to 10 percent. With plans to add an additional 20 faculty members in the next three years, the School will continue to pursue world-class academicians and place a strong emphasis on identifying and recruiting additional women faculty.

Support for new initiatives will allow UCLA Engineering to attract and retain a richer pool of engineering students. Gifts of any amount will help build the School’s endowment to ensure the future of diversity in engineering at UCLA.
