Highlights and Statistics

Reaching New Heights
Through the combined efforts of all our stakeholders, the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science has continued its upward momentum in 2004-05. These partnerships enrich all aspects of our mission of education, research and service.

Our continued success owes much to our responsiveness to new opportunities, as well as the high quality of our faculty, students, and alumni. Their accomplishments are a testament to our tradition of excellence. This year’s faculty achievements include election to the National Academy of Engineering and the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers.

Last year, our faculty brought in more than $88 million in gifts, contracts and grants to support research activities that bridge traditional academic boundaries and will change the way we live. In addition, 17 of our alumni received new academic appointments, as did six of our postdoctoral researchers, sharing knowledge gained at UCLA with institutions around the world.

We are leveraging available expertise across the campus and now have more than 20 faculty in engineering who hold joint appointments. By bringing in faculty from other disciplines, we are creating a dynamic exchange of ideas and perspectives, leading to new discoveries and advances in the classroom and in the laboratory.

Although we do not believe rankings are a comprehensive measure of our good work, it is nice to be recognized as a leader in engineering education. In the 2006 US News & World Report ranking of graduate programs, the School is now ranked 15th in the country and ninth among public universities.
