Defining Engineering Excellence
2005-06 Annual Report
Through the efforts and support of our faculty, staff, students,
alumni and friends, the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering
and Applied Science reached new heights in 2005-06. Strong collaborations
with all of our stakeholders hone and enhance our trifold mission
of education, research and service.
The accomplishments of our faculty, students, and alumni have a
direct impact on our continued success, and reflect our tradition
of excellence. In the previous academic year, our faculty secured
more than $91 million in gifts, contracts, and grants to support
interdisciplinary research activities. Fifteen UCLA Engineering
alumni received new academic appointments at institutions around
the world, using their knowledge and experience from UCLA to educate
future engineers and scientists.
In keeping with our tradition of innovation, we continue to partner
with colleagues across the campus and around the world on exciting
new areas of research. In addition, more than 20 of our faculty
hold joint appointments in other disciplines, creating an environment
that fosters a free exchange of ideas and new discoveries in both
the laboratory and the classroom.
New and upgraded facilities
A new facility for the Center for Embedded Networked Sensing was
completed in June. The building will provide researchers from multiple
disciplines with a space that supports interactivity among faculty,
students, staff, and embedded systems.
Slated for completion later this year, the Engineering IB replacement
building will house the departments of bioengineering and materials
science and engineering. The building is designed to spur increased
interaction among faculty and students, and shared labs in the facility
will support new ways of research.
Our students are also making key contributions to our infrastructure.
The class of 2006 raised more than $4,300 to help renovate SEAS
Café, and gifts from students this year were more than double the
previous year’s campaign.
Research centers and initiatives
Over the last four years, the School has secured six major externally-funded
interdisciplinary research centers. Focusing on issues critical
to Southern California’s future, UCLA Engineering has also established
seven multidisciplinary research centers in areas such as alternative
energies, water reclamation, information security, and the entertainment
industry.
Educational milestones
Committed to providing our students with an education that will
prepare them for success in their careers, the School has recently
completed a thorough review and revision of its undergraduate curricula
in all departments. Among the changes, the reduction of the number
of required units and the addition of three-course breadth requirement.
In addition, we are expanding our educational programs to better
serve our alumni. The School’s online Master of Science in Engineering
degree program will launch in Spring Quarter 2007, offering classes
taught by our world-class faculty members.
