UCLA Engineering Co-hosts Major Conference on Computational Mechanics
Earlier this year, the UCLA
Henry Samueli School of
Engineering and Applied
Science co-hosted the 7th
World Congress on Computational
Mechanics with Northwestern University
at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza
Hotel.
More than 1,800 people attended the
July event, coming to the Congress from
more than 60 countries around the
world. As the largest and finest worldwide
scientific event held to date in the
field of computational mechanics, the
Congress offered 460 technical sessions
and several short courses over the course
of the seven-day event, and more than
technical 2,000 papers were presented.
“The Congress serves as recognition of
UCLA’s reputation in computational
mechanics around the world,” said
Congress co-chair and UCLA Civil and
Environmental Engineering Professor
J.S. Chen. “The field spans all disciplines
in computational engineering and
science, and that breadth is reflected in
the Congress’ five themes.”
The event’s technical themes— computational mathematics, computational
bioscience, computational nanotechnology, computational materials
science, and high performance computing—showcased the many applications
of computation mechanics to scientific research and industrial development.
“There were a lot of people who
worked very hard to make the Congress
a big success,” said Chen. “I was fortunate
to work with such a talented group:
Cassandra Rigmaiden, professors J.W. Ju,
E.Taciroglu, and W. Klug at UCLA, and
professors W. K. Liu and T. Belytschko at
Northwestern University.”
