In an interview with USA Today, computer science professor Rafail Ostrovsky said the CIA and the National Security Agency are evaluating a program of his that would let intelligence analysts search huge batches of intercepted communications for keywords and other criteria, while discarding messages that don’t apply. A collaborative effort between mechanical engineering professor Greg Carman and pediatric cardiologists at Mattel Children’s Hospital at UCLA was featured in The Engineer. The team is using thin film nitinol to develop a collapsible heart valve for children. This research also was covered in numerous national medical trades. February 15, 2006
