Graduating Seniors Pledge Integrity in their Careers
in Order of the Engineer Ceremony

2006 Order of the Engineer Participants

At the 2006 Engineering Senior Dinner, the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science revived a long dormant tradition – the Order of the Engineer ceremony. Students at the dinner had the opportunity to take an oath to practice engineering with high standards and integrity. More than 200 young engineers pledged to serve humanity and to uphold the dignity of the engineering profession.

The ceremony was led by Stephanie August (BA ’72, MS ’85, PhD ’91), a professor of computer science at Loyola Marymount University, and Raymond Pon (BS ’01, MS ’03), a research fellow at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

Participating students were given a stainless steel ring, to be worn on the fifth finger of the working hand following the ceremony.

“The rings that our students now wear will serve as a daily reminder of their oath,” said Dean Vijay K. Dhir, who participated in the ceremony, “and of their commitment to serve society as ethical engineers.”
