Faculty In Memoriam
The UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science recently lost
three members of its faculty, professors emeriti Harry Buchberg and Rokuro “Rocky” Muki, and adjunct professor Ryoichi Kikuchi.
Buchberg passed away November 1, 2003 at the age of 86. He was among the first faculty appointed after the College of Engineering was founded and served with distinction for many years, including
service to the academic senate, as well as acting as department head and chair of the faculty.
Buchberg retired in 1983 after a teaching career that began in the early 1950s as a part-time lecturer, and as an associate professor in 1956 in the former Energy and Kinetics Department. In 1982, he transferred to what was then the Mechanics and Structures Department, and was recalled to teach several courses after his retirement.
Muki passed away on February 10, 2004 at the age of 75, following a long battle
with cancer. He is survived by his wife, son and daughter.
He retired in 1993, following an academic career at UCLA, which began in the former Division of Applied Mechanics in 1967. Muki received his PhD in mechanical engineering from Keio University in Tokyo in 1959.
Kikuchi passed away on September 19, 2003 at the age of 84. He is survived by
his wife of 60 years, Toshi; children John and Ann; and seven grandchildren.
He joined the Department of Materials Science and Engineering in 1984 as an adjunct
professor, where he taught courses in advanced thermodynamics for 10 years. Kikuchi
received his PhD in physics from Tokyo University in 1951.
All of these distinguished faculty members will be missed by their colleagues, former students, and staff of the School.
