Letter
from the Dean
The
last year has been a tremendous period of growth for the UCLA Henry
Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science, and I am very
pleased to have been named Dean of a school with so much potential.
The quality of our faculty and students is unrivaled, and I believe
we will continue to lead the nation in both our research activities
and our educational programs.
In addition to the excitement of two interdisciplinary centers
opening within the School this year, we had the opportunity to
celebrate the accomplishments of some of our outstanding alumni,
friends, and students at the Engineering Awards Dinner last fall.
We are also moving forward with replacing one-half of Engineering
I, an outdated facility, with a new five-story building that will
house state-of-the-art laboratories and meeting rooms, as well
as additional space for faculty and graduate student offices and
the multidisciplinary centers.
The replacement building provides the School with an infrastructure
for next-generation research, and will assist our efforts to attract
outstanding faculty and students. The open floor plan - designed
to encourage collegial discussions - will provide an enriched
experience for our students and facilitate additional interactions among our faculty. Its location,
just south of Kerckhoff Hall, provides the School with increased
visibility on campus.
Even as we move forward with construction plans, our faculty
and students continue to pursue new areas of research, from a
vest made of reconfigurable fabric able to monitor a patient's
health and deliver drugs as needed to developing new antenna designs
using mathematical models to new
methods of cooling chips with micro-spray techniques.
We are not pursuing our research in a vacuum, however. The work
of our faculty and students has a significant impact on the community,
whether through outreach programs designed to cultivate an early
interest in engineering and science, our students' efforts to
improve the lives of people in disadvantaged areas, or environmental
research monitoring contaminants in soils and water and measuring
the impact of pollutants on the Santa Monica Bay.
And we are working to share our knowledge with colleagues in
industry and at other institutions through yearly research reviews
and symposia. In the coming months, UCLA will host the Computer
Science Department and Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department
research reviews, as well as the fourth Wireless Internet Data
and Enterprise Applications conference.
We hope we will have the support of our alumni and friends as
we strive to enhance the research and activities of our engineering
faculty and students. I look forward to working with you as we
find new ways to improve the lives of those around us through
engineering.
Sincerely,

Vijay K. Dhir
Dean
