Letter from the Dean

Vijay K. Dhir
The UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science owes much of its ongoing success to the generous support of our alumni and friends. In both the short and long-term, gifts from individuals and companies are critical to our continued ability to successfully compete with engineering schools around the world.

Although UCLA is a state university, it receives only about 15 percent of its operating budget from the state. Without the assistance of alumni, friends, and partners in industry that we would be unable to fulfill our threefold mission of service, education, and research.

In this issue of UCLA Engineer, we are pleased to highlight several recent gifts to the School, including three endowed scholarships, which provide a legacy of support for current and future students, and the funding to renovate a graduate student center in electrical engineering, providing substantive resources for talented students.

We expect to complete construction on a new building later this year, the first of two new structures that will replace Engineering I. This state-of-the-art facility was funded in large part through the generosity of Henry and Susan Samueli. This building's unique layout will support collaborative research in exciting new ways, and enrich the work of our students and faculty.

We are fortunate, also, to receive many gifts from our corporate partners. As well as direct gifts, their gifts-in-kind of equipment and software help us maintain and upgrade our infrastructure and educational resources.

Gifts of every size make a significant difference in our ability to provide a quality education to students from diverse backgrounds and to strengthen our world-renowned research programs. We are pleased to recognize the generosity of those who made gifts to the School in 2004-05 in the Honor Roll of Donors.

When you make a gift to UCLA Engineering, you are making an investment in the future. It is our privilege and responsibility to generate new intellectual capital in the engineers of tomorrow, and to create new ideas, devices, and applications. We are proud to be making a real difference in the quality of our lives, and invite you to partner with us in this traditional of excellence.

Sincerely,

Vijay K. Dhir
Dean
