Symposium Highlights UCLA, National Research

Chancellor Albert Carnesale, Dr. Raymond Orbach, Dr. Carol Lucas, and Dean Vijay K. Dhir.
Last October, the School hosted a symposium highlighting the roles the faculty and students play in the growing fields of nanotechnology, bioengineering and information technology.

National leaders shared their perspectives on the future of scientific research. Dr. Raymond Orbach, director of the Office of Science, Department of Energy, spoke on the impact high-end computation will likely have on scientific discovery in the coming years. Dr. Carol Lucas, a biomedical engineering program director at the NSF, presented future opportunities for research in bioengineering, and Dr. Tim Kraybach, manager of JPL's Life Detection Science and Technology Program, shared NASA's perspective on the convergence of nano-, bio-, and infotechnologies.

Additionally, UCLA professors Deborah Estrin, Chih-Ming Ho, Leonard Kleinrock, Carlo Montemagno, and John Villasenor presented overviews of their research in embedded systems, biotechnology, information technology, and nanotechnology that brought home the School's deep involvement in the nation's scientific endeavors.
