Henry Samueli Honored as
UCLA Alumnus of the Year; Engineering Alumnus Ronald Sugar Garners
UCLA 2005 Professional Achievement Award
Electrical engineering professor and engineering
school namesake Henry Samueli ('75, '76, '80) has been chosen
as UCLA's 2005 Edward A. Dickson Alumnus of the Year. The Alumnus
of the Year Award is given for special and outstanding service
to UCLA, and is awarded to individuals who have brought great
honor and distinction to the University.
Samueli is co-founder, chairman, and chief technical
officer (CTO) of Broadcom Corporation. The Office of the CTO is
responsible for driving the vision of Broadcom's research and
development activities as well as helping coordinate corporate-wide
engineering development strategies. He has over 25 years of experience
in the fields of communications systems engineering and digital
signal processing.
Since 1985, Samueli has been a professor in the
electrical engineering department at UCLA in the School that bears
his name. He has supervised advanced research programs in broadband
communications circuits and digital signal processing, and he
has published more than 100 technical papers in these areas.
He was elected to the National Academy of Engineering
in 2003 in recognition of his pioneering contributions to academic
research and technology entrepreneurship in broadband communications,
and is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics
Engineers and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Samueli
also was named the UCLA Engineering Alumnus of the Year in 2000.
Also garnering a university-wide award this year
is engineering alumnus Ronald Sugar ('68, '69, '71), chairman,
president and CEO of Northrop Grumman, who has been chosen to
receive UCLA's 2005 Professional Achievement award. The honor
recognizes Sugar’s sterling record of distinguished career
accomplishments, complemented by outstanding contributions to
his profession.
Sugar joined Northrop Grumman following its 2001
acquisition of Litton Industries Inc., a diversified defense and
technology company. He previously served as Litton's president
and chief operating officer and as a member of its board of directors.
Prior to joining Litton, Sugar was president and
chief operating officer of TRW Aerospace and Information Systems,
and a member of the chief executive office of TRW Inc., a global
automotive, aerospace and information systems company. Earlier,
he ran TRW's worldwide automotive electronics business and also
served as TRW's chief financial officer. TRW Inc. was acquired
by Northrop Grumman in 2002.
Sugar was elected a member of the National Academy
of Engineering in 2004 for major contributions to advanced space
communication systems and leadership in innovative aerospace programs.
In 1996, he was named the UCLA Engineering Alumnus of the Year.
Samueli and Sugar were both honored at the UCLA
Awards Ceremony on Sunday, May 15.
