Frank Chang Receives John J. Guarrera Engineering Educator of the Year Award

Frank Chang, the Wintek Chair in Electrical Engineering at UCLA’s Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and chair of the department, has been selected to receive the 2014 John J. Guarrera Engineering Educator of the Year Award from the Engineers’ Council. This award recognizes an individual who is both professionally outstanding and has a top reputation for accomplishments and leadership.

frank-chang-200px Chang was awarded “for transformative contributions in undergraduate engineering education to prepare students for the challenges of the 21st century, and for pioneering research in high-speed, high frequency semiconductor devices, materials and integrated circuits.”  As chair of the electrical engineering department (EE), Chang realigned the educational standards for the undergraduate program through a curriculum reformation according to his unique concept of “Learning by Building.”  Under this reformation, students become motivated and inspired as they learn the actual applications and impacts of their work, rather than solely studying pure mathematics and abstract concepts. With the support of industry, Chang also devoted resources for every EE undergraduate to conduct experiments in non-traditional laboratory spaces, such as dorms and homes, which helps the students have both a fun learning experience and develop self-confidence in their work.

Chang's devotion to undergraduate students extends to supporting student organizations by providing them with pertinent resources in order to design, develop and build projects for top regional competitions.

Chang has received many honors and awards worldwide for his many technical accomplishments. He has been recognized for technical and research contributions in the development of high-speed and high-frequency III-V semiconductor materials, devices and RF/wireless & mixed-signal GaAs HBT (Heterojunction  Bipolar Transistor) and Si CMOS integrated circuits for communication, interconnect and imaging systems.
