Gregory J.
Pottie received his B.S. degree in engineering physics from Queen’s
University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada in 1984, and his M.Eng.
and Ph.D. degrees from McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario,
Canada in 1985 and 1988, respectively.
From 1989
to 1991, he worked in the Transmission Research Department at
Codex/Motorola in Massachusetts, where he was involved in development
of high-speed digital subscriber lines and coding and equalization
schemes for voice-band modems. He joined the UCLA Electrical Engineering
Department in 1991.
Professor
Pottie has been Associate Dean of Research and Physical Resources
for the School since July 2003. In the prior four years, he served
as a vice chair of the Electrical Engineering Department, responsible
successively for undergraduate programs (three years) and graduate
programs (one year). He is currently deputy director of the NSF
Center for Embedded Networked Sensors.
His research
interests include wireless sensor networks, channel coding theory
and wireless communication systems. Current projects include information
theoretic issues in sensor networks and the effects of constrained
mobility on sensor network performance.
From 1997
to 1999 he was secretary to the board of governors for the IEEE
Information Theory Society. In 1998 Professor Pottie was named
the faculty researcher of the year for the School of Engineering.
He is a member
of the Bruin Master's Swim Club (butterfly), the St. Alban's Choir
(2nd bass), and is a co-founder of Sensoria Corporation. |
