Since it officially opened its doors in 1945, the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science has consistently been at the forefront of cutting edge interdisciplinary research. Among its many notable accomplishments, UCLA is home to the first node of the Internet and the first reverse-osmosis membrane. And our faculty and students continue to research and develop advanced technologies that improve our lives and our world.

Last year, the School received nearly $81 million to support engineering research from federal agencies, corporations, and individuals. New research initiatives in biomedical informatics, nanomanufacturing and nanotechnologies, alternative energy solutions, and information technologies ensure that we will maintain our reputation for leadership in emerging disciplines.

We also continue to recruit exceptional new faculty members, researchers and educators who will continue our tradition of excellence – 22 members of our faculty have been elected to the National Academy of Engineering. The high quality of our faculty extends to the classroom: we require that every faculty member, no matter how senior, teach at least one undergraduate course each year.

The School's seven major interdisciplinary research centers also add to our recognition worldwide. These centers, funded by federal agencies and industry, will bring more than $100 million to Southern California, and support research and educational activities.

Our outstanding graduate students enrich our academic environment, inspire, teach and challenge our undergraduate students, and go on to lead extraordinary careers in industry and academia.

We place no less emphasis on the quality of our undergraduate programs. To better prepare our graduates for an increasingly interconnected world, we have added a new three-course minor requirement and are strengthening the curricula in all of our departments.

The exceptional dedication of our students, faculty and staff, and our collaborations with other institutions, industry and government ensure that the School is well poised to succeed in our rapidly changing world. We are delighted you are sharing this remarkable journey with us.

Sincerely,

Vijay K. Dhir
Dean
