The UCLA Center for Excellence in Engineering and Diversity (CEED), LAUSD
and MESA will host a two-day MESA teacher professional development MATI
Conference on the campus of UCLA on August 15 -16, 2003.
This is the third year that UCLA has hosted a MESA Advisor's Training Institute (MATI) on its campus. The conference size and format has changed this year. Due to budget constraints, the conference will serve L.A. Regional MESA advisors from CSU Long Beach, CSU Los Angeles, CSU Northridge, UCLA, and USC. The conference is set up as a two-day professional development event. All participants will receive a $200 value package which includes a $100 teacher incentive award and payment for a class through UCLA Extension. Upon completion of the conference, all participants will receive one semester unit of continuing education credit. This year's focus at Mini-MATI is "Hands-on, Math, Engineering, and Science (HOMES)." MESA advisors will experience a high quality of professional development in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) subjects; will gain hands-on experience working with models that integrate technology into STEM classroom instruction; and be empowered to create and sustain interactive, challenging learning environments. The outcome of the conference will provide MESA Advisors with STEM-based lesson plans, projects, and activities that can be used in their classrooms. MESA teachers will be given the tools and knowledge that will ultimately improve student performance. In addition, they will learn of various teaching resources, grant opportunities, and readings that will allow for continued professional development beyond Mini-MATI which will have a direct impact in their classroom learning environment. It is anticipated that there will be continued collaboration and sharing of knowledge amongst all instructors and participants through the dissemination of information and lesson plans on the UCLA CEED website. This includes sharing of follow-up lesson plans submitted by participants and reviewed by MATI instructors. Read more news about the conference and CEED's programs in a Mini-MATI newsletter.
